Reverse osmosis (RO) uses a process to removing dissolved inorganic solids (such as magnesium and calcium ions) from water by forcing it through a membrane under pressure so that the water passes through but the contaminants do not.

Reverse osmosis effectively purifies water normally combined with a other filters such as a mechanical  filter in order to pure fresh water.
